An eSIM that won’t connect can be stressful, especially if you’ve just landed somewhere new. The good news: most eSIM issues on iPhone come down to a small handful of causes, and almost all are fixable in a few minutes. Here’s how to troubleshoot, in the order most likely to solve it fastest.
1. Check That the eSIM Is Actually Installed
Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) and confirm your eSIM plan appears in the list. If it’s missing entirely, the profile likely didn’t finish installing — you’ll need to reinstall it using the QR code or activation details from your provider.
2. Make Sure Data Roaming Is Turned On
This is the single most common cause of “no data” on a travel eSIM. Tap your eSIM plan under Settings → Cellular, then confirm Data Roaming is switched ON for that specific line. Since travel eSIMs work by roaming onto a local network, this must be enabled or you’ll have signal but no data.
3. Confirm the Right Line Is Set for Cellular Data
If you have both your home SIM/eSIM and your travel eSIM active, go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and make sure your travel eSIM is selected as the active data line — not your home line, which likely has no local coverage and no data plan enabled abroad.
4. Toggle Airplane Mode
A quick airplane-mode toggle forces your iPhone to re-search for a network connection, which resolves a surprising number of connectivity hiccups:
- Swipe to Control Center and tap Airplane Mode ON
- Wait 15 seconds
- Tap it OFF again
5. Restart Your iPhone
If toggling airplane mode doesn’t help, a full restart clears the network stack and often resolves stuck connections that a simple toggle won’t fix.
6. Check You’re Within Your Plan’s Coverage Area and Validity
Two things to verify with your provider or account dashboard:
- Coverage: Some regional plans exclude specific countries — confirm your current location is actually covered
- Validity: Check the plan hasn’t expired or run out of data, since some plans start their countdown from first network connection, not purchase
7. Manually Select the Network
Go to Settings → Cellular → [Your eSIM] → Network Selection, turn off Automatic, and manually pick an available carrier. This can help in areas where automatic network selection picks a network your eSIM isn’t authorized to roam on.
8. Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)
If nothing above works, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi networks and VPN configurations too, so only use it if other steps have failed — but it resolves deeper network configuration issues that simpler fixes can’t.
Still Not Working?
If you’ve been through all the steps above and still have no connection, contact your eSIM provider’s support — there may be an account-side activation issue that needs to be resolved on their end rather than on your device.
The Bottom Line
Most eSIM connectivity issues on iPhone come down to data roaming being off or the wrong line being set for cellular data — check those two first before assuming something’s seriously wrong. If you’re setting up a new eSIM from scratch, our iPhone eSIM setup guide walks through the full process.
